The retail sales of the Comunitat Valenciana have stagnated in 2018 after four years of continuous growth, showing a change of trend in its evolution. The sales index has fallen two tenths in December with respect to the same month of the previous year1, the same rate as in Spain.
Food is the group that has reduced its sales the most, nine tenths. The group of other goods (fashion, footwear, furniture, household appliances and leisure products, culture, technology and other diverse), together, has maintained a slight increase of three tenths. From the results obtained for Spain2, it can be deduced that the item of household equipment (furniture, household appliances, home textiles) has increased its sales the most, followed by personal equipment (fashion, footwear and accessories). The products of leisure, culture, technology and others, have suffered a decrease in their sales during this period.
Sales of large chains have increased by 0.6% in December compared to the previous year. At the same time, the sales of small chains, large stores and unilocated companies have suffered decreases of 1.0%, 0.8% and 0.5% respectively during the same period.
The stagnation of sales at the end of 2018 is justified, among other reasons, by the advance of Christmas purchases due to the extension of the periods of promotions and discounts, which has had an impact on the Christmas campaign.
Retail trade has continued to generate employment. The month of December ended with a 1.9% increase in the number of affiliations compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 210,983 affiliations.
The retail chain has five years of positive evolution of affiliations. This increase has not been reflected in the same way in all groups of workers. The number of freelancers or self-employed workers has decreased by 1.2% to stand at 59,263 self-employed, while salaried workers or employees have increased by 3.1%, reaching 151,720 members.
